Liverpool and Holland ahead Cody Gakpo requested privacy after announcing the loss of his unborn son during his partner’s pregnancy.
The 27-year-old shared the message while on international duty at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he helped the Netherlands qualify for the round of 16.
His partner, model Noa van der Bij, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a social media post on Saturday, revealing that the couple’s baby boy had died before birth. Their second child was due in October.
A couple announces a fatal loss
Van der Bij shared a photo of the couple holding hands over a blanket and knitted hat as she announced the family’s loss.
“It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our boy passed away during pregnancy,” she wrote.
“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.”
She later posted another message describing a visit to church with the couple’s young son, Samuel.
“We went to the church to light a candle, and after that we walked with my son Samuel to the church playground.
“There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There couldn’t have been a better sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Gakpo begs for understanding
Gakpo also issued a brief statement, asking for space for his family as they deal with the tragedy.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family.
“We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”
Despite the personal loss, Gakpo featured in all three of the Netherlands’ World Cup group stage matches, scoring twice in his country’s win over Sweden as the Dutch secured qualification for the knockout round.
The Netherlands are due to face Morocco in the round of 16 on Tuesday in Mexico, although it remains unclear whether Gakpo will be available for the match.
