“Women have nothing to lose if they don’t get married” – a man sparked a debate with a controversial opinion

Nigerian man caused backlash online after sharing his views on marriage, children and why he believes women have less to lose by staying single.
In the now-popular video shared on X (formerly Twitter), he argued that many men are still ashamed of single women, especially those in their 30s, despite marriage being a personal choice.
In his own words he said:
“In 2026, many men still think foolishly. I’m happy that women are becoming wiser. If a woman chooses not to marry and have children for the rest of her life, she has nothing to lose. But if a man chooses not to marry or have children, he will lose.”
The man explained that men often focus on preserving their family names, possessions and legacies through children.
Using his own family history as an example, he said he knows more about his grandfather than his grandmother, which he believes shows how it is usually traced to family heirlooms.
“Men build generations. A man needs someone to live after him and keep his name. So these who shame women that if you’re not married in your 30s, your life is useless, Oga, a woman’s life is not useless,” he added.
His comments drew mixed reactions, with some agreeing that women should not be pressured into marriage, while others disagreed with his views.
The video continued to spark debate online, with many Nigerians sharing differing opinions on marriage, children and personal fulfillment.

“I’m happy that women are starting to open their eyes in this generation. If a woman chooses not to marry and have children, she has nothing to lose, but if a man chooses to do the same, he’s at a loss.”
