“He won ₦16 million betting on 15 years, the whole street came out to celebrate” — recounts Lady

AND woman she recalled how a teenager from her neighborhood won ₦16 million in sports betting at the age of 15, an event that stunned residents and changed the fortunes of his family in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, a few years ago.
According to the report, the boy’s mother, a garri trader, gave him ₦3,000 to deliver garri to a customer.
Instead of completing the task, the teenager allegedly used the money to place a bet, an impulsive decision that later led to an unexpected outcome.
An unforgettable evening
Recounting the incident, the woman described the moment when the winning result was confirmed.
“The moment he realized he had won, he ran in front of their house screaming. He threw his mother’s furniture all over the place in excitement, and the whole neighborhood came out to see what was going on.”
She added that the scale of the victory initially caused panic at home. “When his father heard the amount – ₦16 million – he almost had a heart attack,“, she said, explaining that disbelief it quickly turned into a celebration across the street.
From the local street to new beginnings
The woman said the family moved shortly after the win. “Not long after, they moved out of our area to a better neighborhood,” she noted, adding that the boy’s mother later expanded the business. “Today she owns one of the biggest garri shops in Port Harcourt.”
The story is an echo of earlier public debates. In 2021, discussions about the participation of minors in betting gained attention after reports of teenagers accessing gambling platforms despite age restrictions.
Public reaction to the recall has been mixed, with some Nigerians seeing it as a rare stroke of luck, while others warn it highlights the risks of youth exposure to gambling.
