“I paid extra for transportation…” — the man recounts his experience with the public driver

AND man recounted how a routine journey in a commercial minibus, popularly known as korope, ended in the loss of his personal belongings after he forgot his charger and power bank in the vehicle and failed to retrieve them five days later, despite repeated attempts to reach the driver in Lagos State.
The incident happened after a passenger got into the vehicle to transport chairs and a table, agreeing on a price before voluntarily adding an extra charge as a token of appreciation for the driver’s efforts.
But the situation changed when he later discovered that his belongings had been left behind, leading to a series of calls and promises yet to be fulfilled.
A routine trip that cost a lot
The man described the trip as initially smooth, noting that he had no reason to suspect any problem until it did realized his things were missing after he got home.
The inability to return the item has since turned to frustration over what he describes as a broken return promise.
“I boarded one of the boxes to pack some chairs and a table and they charged me 10k. To appreciate his efforts, I paid him 15k instead,” he said.
Lost things and missed calls
He added that the initial communication with the driver gave him hope, but the situation later changed as attempts to recover his belongings became unsuccessful.
“When I got home, I discovered that I had forgotten the cable and the power bank in the car. He promised to bring them the next day, but it’s been five days and he’s not answering my calls“, he stated.
In 2023, similar complaints of lost items in commercial transport vehicles in major Nigerian cities sparked a public debate on passenger trust, responsibility and liability, with many passengers sharing experiences of lost items and difficulties in tracking drivers after a journey.
The incident has since sparked online debates about the reliability of daily transport in urban Nigeria, with users divided between warning commuters to be more careful and calling for greater accountability among commercial drivers.
