“We thought it was a scam” – Mayorkun’s mother recounts how Davido changed her son’s life

Mother of a popular Nigerian singer Mayorkun opened up about how a simple cover video posted online changed her son’s life forever.

Speaking on the Talk with B podcast, she recalled how neither she nor other family members expected Mayorkun’s career to take off after he recorded and shared a cover of David’s song on social media.

“There is nothing God can’t do. We didn’t expect it. He just went to his cousin in Lekka and when he got there, he went to the music room and played David’s song and posted it online.

Before you know it, it’s gone viral. He made a cover for ‘Money’ and posted it on Instagram, and it got to David,” she said.

According to her, the family was in the beginning was skeptical when Davido reached out to Mayorkun, believing it could have been a scam.

However, Mayorkun’s brother, Ayobami, insisted that the message was true.

“At first they asked themselves: ‘Is it him or not?’ But as soon as they recognized his voice, they jumped with excitement. Davido told him he liked the song and asked for his measurements. Before we knew it, he had sent him a whole box of gifts,” she added.

She further revealed that not long after, Davido invited Mayorkun to record music with him, which led to the creation of the hit song Eleko, which launched the singer into the limelight.

The proud mother noted that the success of the song changed Mayorkun’s life almost overnight and the residents of their Ajah neighborhood even nicknamed them “Oriyami Eleko”.

The story has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians praising David for supporting young talent and helping launch Mayorkun’s successful music career.
