Scotland ended their 36-year drought after winning the World Cup by beating Haiti

Scotland moved to the top of Group C after earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory Haiti in Boston, ending a 36-year wait to win the FIFA World Cup.
John McGinn’s first-half goal proved decisive as Steve Clarke’s side picked up three vital points in their tournament opener.
This victory marked Scotland’s first World Cup triumph since defeating Sweden at Italia 90.
Scotland’s success was made all the more significant after Brazil and Morocco were held to a 1-1 draw earlier in the group, leaving the Scots in a strong position ahead of tougher tests against both nations.
McGinn delivers a historic moment
McGinn scored the only goal of the game in the 28th minute, rewarding Scotland’s positive start against a Haitian side that remained dangerous throughout the contest.

Reflecting on the win, the Aston Villa midfielder revealed the mindset that inspired his game.
“These opportunities don’t come around too often,” McGinn said.
“We said before in big tournaments, did we do our best? Did we leave the tournament saying we could have done more or we could have shown more?”
He added: “That’s what I tried to bring into the game tonight. Sometimes things didn’t work out, but I promised myself driving to the stadium to be positive and try things. If they don’t work out, pick up the ball and try again.”
While Scotland created chances, they were forced to defend resolutely in the closing stages as Haiti pushed for an equaliser.
Clarke praises resilience
Scotland coach Steve Clarke admitted the game was not perfect but was delighted with the result.
“I’ve just said to the captain over there, Andy Robertson, it’s about time we got a game in the group stage!” Clarke said.
“We probably put the fans through it a bit. Everyone said ‘the game we have to win’. We won the game.”
The coach also praised his players’ defensive commitment, adding: “If teams let them play, but if they have to dig in and show that character and that resilience, that’s what they do as well.”
The win gives Scotland a dream start to the campaign and boosts their hopes of reaching the knockout stages for the first time.
