A Nigerian lost property worth ₦25 million after returning from the US

Nigerian man he was left devastated after returning from the United States to discover that the house he had spent years in and a building worth around £25 million had allegedly been sold without his knowledge.
A story shared on X by a a lady who claims to be a relative, he described in detail how the property in Eneka changed ownership while the man was abroad, and a close family member was allegedly involved in the transactions.
Years of investment and silent deception
According to the report, the man traveled to the United States in 2018 after receiving a job opportunity and left his unfinished building under the care of someone he trusted.
“Just supervise the workers for me,“, he allegedly said before leaving Nigeria.
At first, progress reports seemed normal, with pictures, videos and invoices allegedly sent to reassure him that construction was going smoothly.
Updates continued for months, and whenever concerns were raised, explanations were given about rising costs, exchange rate changes, and outages.
Encouraged by what he believed to be steady progress, he allegedly continued to send money over two years, totaling nearly £25 million.
A shocking discovery after an unexpected return
The situation took a dramatic turn when the man returned to Nigeria unannounced in December, intending to inspect the property himself.
Upon arrival, he allegedly discovered another family already living in the house.
Further investigations allegedly revealed that the property was used as collateral for a loan obtained through the cooperative, which later led to its seizure and sale after default.
The account also claimed that funds meant for the construction were diverted to another business venture in Abuja.
The alleged actions were linked to his younger brother, who was entrusted with overseeing the project.
Family pressure and legal action
After the discovery, family members reportedly encouraged him to avoid government involvement, insisting that the matter remain within the family.
“Don’t get the police involved. He’s still your brother. Family things should stay within the family. Don’t embarrass us,” the report said.
However, the man reportedly privately rejected the settlement and filed a case, which led to his brother’s arrest and the sealing of the alleged business premises.
The decision caused divisions within the family, with some members criticizing him for taking legal action.
Betrayal, Fallout and a new beginning
According to the testimony, the incident caused long-term tension in the family, gatherings became strained, and relationships were damaged.
Despite the emotional and financial loss, the man reportedly began rebuilding on a smaller piece of land, this time under stricter legal supervision.
He is also said to now insist on formal documentation in all dealings, often advising others: “Love your family. But document everything.”
