“Anything extra is now considered a luxury” — The woman explains why the family chose gas instead of shawarma

AND woman has sparked conversations online after sharing how her family scrapped plans for a shawarma dinner and spent the money on cooking gas instead.

The woman explained that her cooking gas ran out the night before while she and her children were craving shawarma.

According to her, her husband suggested that she buy shawarma and drinks for the whole family for dinner.

However, before buying, she decided to calculate how much would a meal cost for a household of five.

Cost comparison changes the family plan

After calculating the costs, the woman said the total cost of buying shawarma and drinks for everyone exceeded £35,000.

She then compared the amount to the cost of refilling a 12kg cooking gas cylinder, which she said currently sells for around £24,000.

Explaining her decision, she wrote:

“Genzin finished last night and the kids were craving shawarma, so was I. Hubby said to go out and get it for all of us with drinks for dinner, I hit the calculator to see how much it would cost for a family of five. I came up with over 35k. 12kg of fuel now costs 24k, we’d use it for at least 4 weeks. I chose gas over shawarma.”

The rising cost of living remains a concern

The woman said the decision reflects the financial reality many households face despite having two working adults in the home.

She noted that even families with stable incomes now have to carefully evaluate their spending on items that were once considered occasional treats.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions on rising food prices, transport costs and household expenses across Nigeria, with many families adjusting their spending priorities.
