Muslims reject terrorists’ claims of Sharia law

The Muslim community in Oyo State has reportedly rejected demands by terrorists to implement Sharia law as part of the conditions for the release of abducted teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
The group condemned the actions of the kidnappers, insisting that terrorism, kidnapping and extortion have no place in Islam.
The Muslim community condemns the terrorists
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Alhaji Ishaq Sanvni, and General Secretary, Alhaji Murisiku Siyanbade, the Muslim community described the kidnappers’ demands as criminal and contrary to Islamic teachings.
According to the group, attempts by kidnappers to justify one’s actions by using religion is a misrepresentation of Islam.
“Islam forbids kidnapping, terrorism and extortion of innocent citizens. Legitimate Sharia promotes justice, peace and the sanctity of human life, values that are in direct opposition to the activities of criminal groups,” the statement read.
“Terrorists do not represent Islam”
The organization emphasized that criminals cannot claim to be acting in the name of Muslims or Islam.
“Terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak for Muslims,” added in the press release.
The group further cited Chapter 5, verse 32 of the Holy Quran, noting that Islam attaches great importance to the protection of human life.
Schools close as a sign of solidarity
The development came after public and private schools in 33 local government areas of Oyo State were reportedly closed in solidarity with the abducted teachers and students.
Alleged demands of terrorists
Kidnappers reportedly attacked three schools in Esiele, Yawota and Alawusa communities on May 15, abducting teachers and students.
Reports indicate that the kidnappers demanded the release of the detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, two Hilux vehicles and the implementation of Sharia law before releasing the captives.
The demands have drawn widespread concern and condemnation from various groups and stakeholders.”
