“My sister almost died…” — The lady says that men are not kind

AND woman shared how the separation of her family many years ago almost turned fatal when her father excluded his children from his health insurance scheme without their mother’s knowledge, leaving her to face a medical emergency without support.

The incident happened shortly after her parents’ separation, when her mother moved with the children to another part of the country.

According to the affidavit, the crisis developed when one of the children suddenly started convulsing.

With limited funds and unaware of insurance changes, the mother rushed the child to a nearby hospital, hoping to begin treatment immediately.

A visit to the hospital that turned into a shock

At the hospital, the woman said her mother was informed that no child had been reported beneficiaries of the father’s health insurance.

She took my sister there with the last money she had. She was then told that our names had been removed.”

Unable to afford treatment, the mother reportedly left the hospital with the convulsing child strapped to her back.

Long walk home

The woman recalled her distressed mother walking home, unsure of what would happen next.

“She walked all the way back with my sister still shaking on her back. Somewhere along the way, my sister stopped convulsing and woke up. My sister survived and is alive today.”

In 2020, similar stories fueled a public debate in Nigeria about women’s financial vulnerability after divorce, particularly in relation to access to healthcare and childcare.

The bill has since reverberated online, reigniting conversations about women’s economic independence, child protection after separation and the risks families face when financial control rests with only one partner.
