WAEC candidates are forced to write practical exam at night in Oyo due to insecurity due to insecurity

Candidates taking the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination 2026 (WASSCE) in parts of Oyo State were reportedly forced to write their agricultural science practical examination late at night, causing concern among parents and education stakeholders.
Reports circulating on social media showed students trying to complete the exam in dimly lit conditions, with some relying on flashlights and mobile phone flashlights after darkness fell in their exam centers.
The development sparked a wide-ranging debate online, with many Nigerians questioning the circumstances that led candidates to stay at examination venues late into the night.
Concerns about testing conditions
According to reports, the situation was related to the late delivery of test materials to some centers.
The delay reportedly disrupted the exam schedule and left candidates waiting for several hours before the practical portion finally began.
Parents and concerned residents have expressed concern for the welfare of the students, especially given the security challenges facing many parts of the country.
Pictures and videos from some centers show candidates sitting in dark classrooms as they try to complete the practical exam.
A number of social media users have argued that better planning and coordination is needed to prevent similar incidents in future exam exercises.
It calls for an explanation
Reacting to the incident, cleric Pastor SO Solarin described the situation as worrying and called for responsibility of the examination body.
He said the delays left many candidates stuck in their centers long after the scheduled examination period.
Solarin also called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to explain the circumstances surrounding the delayed examination materials.
The incident has since sparked debate on social media platforms, with many Nigerians calling for improved logistics and examination management to ensure students can pass their papers in safe and appropriate conditions.
