Nollywood actress Blessing Nze Obasi has addressed the backlash she received after playing a lesbian prisoner in the second season of the hit series Blood Sisters.
In an interview on Yanga FM, the actress revealed that her role in the show drew criticism from some Christian viewers who questioned her faith and moral values based solely on the character she portrays.
According to her, the reactions highlighted a common misunderstanding of the nature of acting and storytelling. She noticed that many people struggled to separate her real identity from the fictional roles she plays in movies.
Obasi explained that acting is a professional craft that requires performers to embody different characters, regardless of their personal beliefs or lifestyle. She added that her experience with the matter made her think about how audiences interpret films without fully appreciating the creative process behind them.
She further clarified that her character was not intended to promote or encourage same-sex relationships, but to reflect certain realities that exist in society, particularly within correctional institutions. She said the story was drawn from real-life experiences and was carefully edited by the production team to avoid unnecessary explicit scenes.
The actress claimed that the purpose of the project is solely storytelling, not moral condemnation or approval of a certain behavior.
Obasi also told how she faced direct criticism from some Christian viewers who, according to her, personally condemned her for the role she played.
Her words…
“The Christians came for me and attacked me. They said ‘as a child of God how could I accept such a role’ and I said ‘we are telling real stories about what happens in prison.’ However, the production company was sensitive enough not to portray the horror of it. They don’t support it (lesbianism) but they tell the story. There is so much positivity. That’s what I meant.”
