Deyemi Okanlawon reveals why he doesn’t turn to his wife first when times are tough

  • Nollywood actor, Deyemi Okanlawon, has revealed that his wife is not the first person he confides in during difficult times, explaining that he relies on therapists and mentors before turning to her.
  • He also encouraged men to seek treatment and build reliable support systems, noting that while men are often expected to be strong protectors, they should not neglect their emotional well-being.

Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has shared his perspective on masculinity, emotional resilience and mental health, revealing that while his wife supports him through tough times, she is not the first person he turns to when life gets overwhelming.

Speaking during a recent interview, the actor explained that men are naturally inclined to endure hardship and protect those around them.

“First of all, I’m a man and we’re made to punch things in the chest. If you punch a man, he has the ability to absorb that punch.”

According to Deyemi, his instinct as a man is to protect others, regardless of the circumstances.

“My job is to protect the people around me. If gbege happens here now, chances are I’ll be in front. It’s what has to happen, no excuses.”

Despite this mindset, the actor emphasized that emotional strength should not stop men from seeking healing and support when needed.

“Now you must also be aware enough to find healing.”

Deyemi revealed that he has intentionally built a strong support system, including mental health professionals and mentors, who he contacts during challenging times.

“I have people on speed dial that I can talk to if I’m going through the worst times. I have a therapist on speed dial, I have my mentors on speed dial.”

He added that while his wife remains an important source of comfort, he avoids putting the emotional burden on her because she already has her own responsibilities.

“Just to tell you the truth, when the going gets tough, my wife is there. She’s not the first… because she’s busy with her own business and raising a family. But when it gets tough, I’ll wake her up in the middle of the night and tell her to help me.”
