NUT announces national protest, demands immediate rescue of Oyo victims

Teachers Union of Nigeria (WALNUT) has called a statewide solidarity protest in response to the kidnapping of teachers and students in Oyo State, saying insecurity threatens Nigeria’s educational future.
Comrade Audu Titus Amba, the national president of the union, announced on Monday that teachers across the country would protest on Tuesday demanding immediate rescue of the victims.
Amba said the union was concerned that several teachers remained in captivity, describing the situation as unacceptable.
“We have seven members in captivity. “That’s enough,” he stated.
He stated that the union had previously asked teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services and start protests, and that the move would now be taken across the country.
The NUT president condemned the increasingly frequent attacks on schools, stressing that teaching and learning cannot survive in an environment of fear and insecurity.
“If the educational environment is not safe, how will we teach? “How will children learn?” he asked.
He called on the federal government, security agencies and community leaders to step up measures to secure schools and ensure the safe return of abducted victims.
The scheduled protest coincides with heightened concerns over the kidnapping of teachers and students in Oyo State, as well as new calls for stronger security at schools across the country.
