Mexico kicked out their home 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in style with a comfortable 2-0 win over South Africa in a dramatic Group A opener that led to three red cards in the second half.

The co-hosts took control early on and were rewarded in the ninth minute when Julian Quiñones capitalized on Erik Lira’s turn, pouncing on the loose ball before slotting through the legs of South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Mexico continued to dominate proceedings before the break. Quiñones hit the post with a low effort, while Bryan Gutiérrez missed another promising chance after being played through by the former Atlas striker.

South Africa were forced to finish with nine men

South Africa’s hopes of a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after half-time when Sphephelo Sithole was sent off for pulling down Gutiérrez as he charged towards goal.

Raúl Jiménez then doubled Mexico’s lead midway through the second half, rising above the defense to head home Roberto Alvarado’s cross to score on his first World Cup start.

The competition became increasingly fierce in the closing stages. Themba Zwane was shown a red card after being adjudged to have punched Alvarado in the face, while Mexico captain César Montes was also sent off for a late tackle on Khuliso Mudau.

Despite late disciplinary drama, Mexico secured all three points and started their World Cup journey on a positive note, while South Africa were left to reflect on a frustrating night that ended with nine men on the field.
