A man sparked a debate after questioning a billionaire employer about the long-term welfare of domestic workers

Nigerian man has sparked debate online after he shared an encounter with a housemaid during a visit to a friend’s residence in Banana Island, Lagos.
Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, he revealed that he had met a woman identified as Rejoice, who had reportedly worked as a cleaner in the household since 2021.
Surprised to find her in the same role years later, he decided to ask how life had treated her after seeing the condition of her two children.
“Rejoice, you are never sorry here? You still live here as of 2021? I see they say you have no children and more responsibilities. What haven’t you achieved for yourself in all these years?” he recalled asking.
The man said he noticed the woman seemed burdened by responsibilities. Curious as to how he was doing, he asked if she would she had plans to start her own business.
According to him, the woman revealed that she had no savings to start a business despite years of working in a wealthy household.
“She told me she still doesn’t have the money to start any business. When I asked her how much she earns, she said between ₦150,000 and ₦180,000 a month. I was shocked. I said, ‘She pays you ₦150,000 a month? Come on now, where is your conscience?’ he added.
The revelation has since sparked an online backlash, with many Nigerians debating fair wages for domestic workers and whether wealthy employers should do more to support long-serving staff.
One user wrote, “£150k is not small money, but Lagos is expensive.” Another added, “An employer pays a salary, not a charity.”
