Debutants Cape Verde surprised Spain with the first World Cup draw

Debutantes Cape Verde produced a major shock at the 2026 World Cup after holding Spain to a 0-0 draw in their opening Group H match in Atlanta.
The result came despite Spain going into the match as clear favourites, with the European champions second in the world compared to Cape Verde’s 67th place in the FIFA rankings.
The island nation, one of the smallest ever to qualify for the World Cup, has frustrated Spain with disciplined defensive play throughout the season.
Vozinha stands tall as Spain fight back
Cape Verde’s resistance was anchored by veteran goalkeeper Vozinho, who put in an outstanding performance at the age of 40.

The stopper made a number of key saves to deny Spain an attacking option and keep his side level during prolonged periods of pressure.
Spain dominated possession but lacked edge in the final third. Their best chance of the first half came when Ferran Torres hit the crossbar from close range after Marco Cucurella’s knockdown.
Even after the introduction of Lamina Yamala in the second half, Spain was unable to find a turnaround.
The Barcelona winger, returning from a hamstring injury to make his World Cup debut, added energy but failed to produce a decisive moment.
Mikel Oyarzabal also came close late on, but his effort was blocked by Cape Verde defender Roberto Lopes, preserving the historic point.
Cape Verde frustrated the European champions
As Spain pushed forward in search of a winner, Cape Verde briefly threatened with a dramatic earthquake. However, defender Diney Borges took a late corner straight at Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón.
The final whistle confirmed a famous result for Cape Verde, who leave their opening match with a point against one of the tournament favourites.
