“I don’t know why whenever Nigeria makes progress it makes Peter Obi angry” — Daniel Bwala

Senior presidential aide Daniel Bwala has taken a swipe at the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Petar Obiaccusing him of opposing key reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu despite previously supporting similar policies.

Bwala, who serves as Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Communication, made the remarks in a strongly worded statement shared on social media, where he questioned Obi’s criticism of the administration’s economic and management policies.

Bwala questions Obi’s stance on reforms

According to Bwala, Obi’s reactions to some of the federal government’s policies suggest inconsistency, noting that the former Anambra governor advocated similar measures ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

“I don’t know why whenever Nigeria is progressing it angers Peter Obi. Why? This is the same Nigeria he wants to rule in his wild chase,” Bwala said.

He went on to state, “Before the 2023 election, he said he would end subsidies; we did and now he says he won’t. He said he would create a state police force; we are, he says he won’t.”

The presidential aide also asserted that Obi once supported the unification of the foreign exchange market but has now distanced himself from the policy.

He said he would consolidate foreign exchange; we did and now he says he won’t. He doesn’t even seem to know what he is planning for Nigeria,” added Bwala.

A renewed war of words

The latest remarks add to a growing exchange of criticism between members of President Tinubu’s administration and Peter Obi, who has remained one of the leading opposition voices since the 2023 presidential election.

Obi has repeatedly criticized some of the government’s economic policies, particularly their impact on the cost of living and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

However, Bwala’s comments suggest the Presidency believes the former presidential candidate has changed his views on several major policy issues.
