Egypt was denied a historic World Cup victory by an own goal from Belgium

Egypt they remained frustrated after the own goal in the second half Belgium they drew 1-1 in their first Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Seattle.
The Pharaohs looked set for a historic win after taking the lead in the first half, but Belgium hit back to earn a share of the points and deny the African side what would have been their first World Cup victory.
Ashour shoots Egypt forward
Egypt started brightly and were rewarded in the 21st minute when Al Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour produced a stunning strike from outside the penalty area.
The midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from 20 yards that flew past Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into the bottom corner, sparking celebrations among the large Egyptian contingent at the stadium.

Buoyed by a passionate support, Egypt looked determined to end their long wait for a World Cup win, having failed to win any of their previous seven matches at the tournament since their debut in 1934.
Belgium fight back for a point
Belgium stepped up the pressure after the break and eventually equalized in the 66th minute.
Thomas Meunier’s dangerous low cross caused problems inside the Egyptian penalty area and defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net as he tried to deal with the threat posed by substitute Romelu Lukaku.
The goal swung the momentum in Belgium’s favor, but Egypt’s defense held firm during the closing stages to prevent further damage.
While disappointment was evident after surrendering the lead, the result nevertheless marked a positive start for Egypt, who avoided defeat at the World Cup for only the third time in their history.
The draw leaves both teams with a point in Group G as they prepare for their remaining group stage matches.
