“Elections are rigged because Nigerians want it” – Peter Obi on the 2027 elections.

Former presidential candidate of the Labor Party Petar Obi shared his thoughts on why elections in Nigeria are often marred by allegations of rigging.

Speaking during a recent visit to Washington, DC, Obi asserted that Nigerians also have a role to play in ensuring that their votes are counted during elections.

“Elections are rigged in Nigeria because Nigerians want to be rigged. I will do everything possible to protect the votes until the 2027 elections, but now it is left to Nigerians to decide if their votes count,” Obi stated.

The former governor of Anambra State stressed that citizens must stay in their polling stations after casting their vote instead of leaving immediately.

He asserted that voter vigilance is one of the most effective ways to ensure credibility choice and prevent manipulation of the results.

“Because if you vote and stay in your constituency and insist that your vote must be counted, it will be counted. But some Nigerians would rather vote and go home and then hours later go to a night vigil to start praying, because they think they are the only ones God made,” he added.

Obi further argued that vote protection should not be left to politicians alone, noting that citizens must actively participate in protecting the electoral process.

He concluded by saying that Nigeria’s biggest challenge remains leadership, a problem he believes can only be solved when citizens take ownership of the country’s democratic process.
