Eriksen stable after the collapse stops amicably

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is conscious and in a stable condition after collapsing during a friendly against Ukraine in Odense, with officials confirming he was able to leave the pitch on his own before being taken for further medical assessment.

The match was stopped in the 65th minute after the incident, and was later called off. Medical staff quickly assisted the 34-year-old, who regained consciousness shortly after the collapse.

Eriksen, who has an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, was immediately assessed on the pitch before being taken to hospital for further checks.

Medical update and emergency response

The Danish Football Association confirmed that Eriksen’s condition had stabilized shortly after the incident.

“Christian is fine and left the field on his own,” said Danish national team doctor Morten Boesen.

“As far as I can see, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but he regained consciousness very quickly and we were in contact with him quickly.”

“He will now undergo further tests in hospital to determine what caused the incident.”

Boesen added: “We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is fine and he asked me to send his greetings to all the players and tell them that he is fine.”

The ICD device was installed following Eriksen’s collapse during the match against Finland in 2021, an episode that temporarily halted his career and prompted extensive medical intervention.

Career context and club background

After recovering, Eriksen resumed professional football with Brentford in 2022 before moving to Manchester United, where he spent three seasons.

He later joined VfL Wolfsburg in 2025 and featured regularly during the 2025–26 Bundesliga campaign, making 34 appearances.

Prior to his recent club appearances, Eriksen also played for Tottenham Hotspur, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most creative midfielders.

The midfielder was earning his 151st international cap at the time of the incident. Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the upcoming World Cup, which begins this week.

Medical assessments are ongoing as officials work to determine the cause of the collapse and the Danish team’s management are in close communication with hospital staff.
