Germany are facing an unusual World Cup challenge as poisonous snakes have been spotted near the training camp

German preparations for 2026 FIFA World Cup were disturbed by an unexpected concern after poisonous snakes were spotted near the team’s practice facility in North Carolina.
The four-time world champions are in Winston-Salem for the tournament, where a recent sighting of a copper snake has prompted caution among players and staff.
Kimmich admits the players are on their guard
Germany captain Joshua Kimmich revealed that the discovery made players pay more attention to their surroundings off the pitch.
While teams are usually focused on tactical preparation and fitness, Kimmich admitted that concerns about local wildlife have become an unusual topic of conversation within the squad.
Concerns grew after players were informed that copperheads are poisonous and any bite will require immediate medical attention. Although rarely fatal, bites of this species can cause serious complications and often require hospital care.

Kimmich noted that such situations are unfamiliar to many German players, given the relative rarity of encounters with dangerous wild animals in their homeland.
Other teams are also adapting to local conditions
Germany is not the only one dealing with this problem. Reports suggest that Switzerland has designated part of the area around its training base in San Diego as a “snake zone” before the start of the tournament.
Norway captain Kristian Thorstvedt also admitted he was upset after learning how common copperhead snakes are in North Carolina.
The sightings highlighted some of the unique environmental challenges teams may face as they compete in different regions of North America.
Germany on a flying start
Despite the unexpected setback, Germany have made an impressive start to their World Cup campaign.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side opened Group E with a dominant 7-1 win over tournament debutants Curacao and are currently top of the table.
They will return to action on June 21 when they face Ivory Coast in their second group stage game.
