Sharing her experience in a viral video posted on X (formerly Twitter), she said the increase reflects the increasing hardship many Nigerians are facing, urging people not to remain silent until the economy begins to affect them personally.
She said in her own words:
“I have been crying since yesterday. I was already paying ₦8 million a year, with two years’ rent in advance and additional charges, before my landlord increased it again.”
The lady explained that she was devastated after receiving the latest notice rent increase despite the current economic challenges in the country.
She also questioned what the Lagos State Government is doing to address the ever-increasing cost of housing and protect tenants from arbitrary rent hikes.
“Recently my landlord increased my rent from ₦8 million to ₦14.5 million a year and I burst into tears. This is why I keep saying that people should not wait for the economy to hit them before they speak up because it will eventually affect everyone.
“Flooding is everywhere and now the cost of housing is becoming unbearable. What is the Lagos State Government doing about landlords and the rising cost of rent?” she added.
Her video drew mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians sharing similar experiences, while others blamed inflation, rising property prices and the country’s economic situation.
The incident has reignited conversations about housing affordability in Lagos as residents continue to struggle with the rising cost of living.
