South Africa bowed out as co-hosts Canada reached the last 16 of the World Cup with an injury-time winner

Canada booked a historic place in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio’s stoppage-time goal sealed a 1-0 victory over South Africa in a tense clash of the 32nd round.

The Canadians appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio scored in the third minute of added time to send Jesse Marsch’s side into the next round for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history.

The win keeps Canada’s tournament dream alive as South Africa’s campaign ends after a disciplined defensive display was undone in the closing moments.

Eustaquio crushes the South African resistance

Clear chances were few and far between during a tricky contest, with both teams struggling to create attacking opportunities.

Canada threatened mostly from the ball but failed to capitalize on their dominance against a well organized South African defence.

The best chance before the winner came in the 64th minute when Tani Oluwaseyi burst through the defence. His effort was saved before Mbekezeli Mbokazi made a timely clearance to prevent the rebound.

Captain Alphonso Davies returned from injury in the 75th minute, replacing Tajon Buchanan, and helped inject fresh energy into Canada’s attack during the closing stages.

The twist finally came in stoppage time. Jacob Shaffelburg’s cross was only partially cleared, allowing Eustaquio to control the loose ball on the edge of the box before firing low into the bottom corner.

The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among the Canadian players and fans as the final whistle confirmed their place in the round of 16.

Canada awaits its next opponents

The win marks Canada’s first knockout stage win at the FIFA World Cup and continues an impressive campaign under head coach Jesse Marsch.

Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands in the round of 16, where a spot in the quarterfinals is at stake.

0While the Canadians improved, their performance highlighted areas for improvement after struggling for much of the game with South Africa at a loss.
