Taiwo Awoniyi explains why he missed Super Eagles friendlies

Nottingham Forest attacker Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed that personal matters were behind his decision to retire from the Super Eagles squad for Unity Cup 2026 and upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
Awoniyi was expected to join Eric Chelle’s side during the June international window but was absent from Nigeria’s successful Unity Cup campaign in London, where the Super Eagles retained the trophy.
Awoniyi clears the air in absence
Addressing speculation surrounding his absence, the 28-year-old clarified that his decision was unrelated to football and was entirely based on personal commitments.
“I was supposed to be in the Super Eagles camp but I pulled out because of personal reasons that I have to attend to,” Awoniyi said.
The striker also expressed confidence in the quality of players available to the national team, insisting that Nigeria’s strength in depth ensures that his absence will not affect the squad.
“We have a lot of talent in the Super Eagles, so for me everyone who is in the squad for the June friendlies is as good as I am,” he added.

The Super Eagles are progressing without the Forest striker
Awoniyi’s explanation comes after Nigeria under Chelle enjoyed an impressive international ranking.
The Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the semi-finals of the Unity Cup before defeating Jamaica 3-0 in the final to successfully defend their title.
The former Union Berlin striker ended the club season in fine form with Nottingham Forest, overcoming injury problems to make a significant impact during the closing stages of the campaign.
Awoniyi remains in the fight
Awoniyi last featured for Nigeria in October 2024 during a 1-0 African Cup of Nations qualifying win against Libya.
Since then, injuries and fierce competition for places have limited his opportunities in the national team.
However, with the striker back to full fitness and consistent performances at club level, he remains a strong contender for future Super Eagles call-ups as Nigeria continue their preparations for upcoming international engagements.
