Messi misses penalty, loses chance to break World Cup goalscoring record

Lionel Messi he missed his first chance to make history after failing to convert a penalty kick during Argentina Match against FIFA World Cup 2026 Austria.
The Argentina captain entered the game needing just one goal to surpass former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s World Cup record of 16 goals.
However, his attempt to win the landmark was put on hold when he blasted a spot-kick wide of the mark in the opening stages of the game.

The opportunity to break the record is slipping away
With a chance to overtake Klose and become the top goalscorer in World Cup history, Messi stepped up from 12 yards but failed to hit the net.
The miss came as a surprise given the veteran striker’s reputation for delivering on the biggest stage, leaving Argentina still in search of a breakthrough, with Messi one goal short of the historic milestone.
