“I told him that I wouldn’t cook on Sundays and that ended our relationship,” Lady recounts

AND woman recounted how a disagreement over Sunday cooking habits led to the end of her serious relationship in Lagos earlier this year, after clashing family values exposed deeper incompatibilities between the pair.
According to the woman, the disagreement arose when she explained early in the relationship that Sundays were not for cooking in her upbringing, as her father routinely took the family out for meals.
She said her boyfriend rejected the idea, insisting it was financially unwise to buy food out when meals could be prepared at home, prompting repeated arguments that eventually led to their breakup.
Conflict of family standards
Describing the situation, the woman said she tried to frame her expectations as aspirational rather than prescriptive.
“I told him he didn’t have to be exactly like my dad, but he had to be close“, she explained, emphasizing that the tradition symbolizes rest and family bonding, not extravagance.
She added that the disagreement escalated when her boyfriend referred to his own upbringing.
“He said that I didn’t meet his mother’s standards either, because she would never waste money buying food outside when there was food at home, said the woman.
After Sunday meals
The woman said the exchange revealed a wider mismatch of values. “It stopped being about food. It became clear that we had different ideas about marriage, money and compromise“, she pointed out, explaining that the relationship ended soon after.
Similar debates have appeared in the public eye in recent years. In 2023, discussions on social media about gender roles and domestic expectations in Nigerian relationships have sparked widespread commentary, with many users arguing that unresolved differences in values often surface through everyday routines.
Public reaction to the woman’s statement has been mixed, with some Nigerians stressing compatibility over tradition, while others argue that setting boundaries early prevents deeper marital strife.
