“I can’t date my younger self…” — A man told how he rejected a girl he liked

A Nigerian graduate student recounted how a road encounter in Lagos, after a Sunday church service, re-opened an old romantic rejection dating back to his student days.

The man he said the meeting happened earlier this month when he unexpectedly ran into a woman who had rejected his benefits years earlier because he was her senior at university.

According to his account, the interaction brought back memories of when he was a level 200 and she was a senior who refused to date him, citing academic hierarchy.

By the time he graduated, he said she had thrived academically and emotionally.

Rejection shaped by status

The man explained that the initial rejection was framed around timing and perception academic standing, not incompatibility.

She told me that she likes me, but that I have to graduate first. She made it clear to me that she couldn’t date a classmate, so I respected her decision and quietly moved on.”

He said communication decreased after her master’s degree and they eventually lost touch.

An unexpected reunion

Years later, the encounter happened while driving home from church. He said the woman seemed surprised by his advances and made a remark that upset him.

She looked at me and said: ‘You are a big boy now. I think I can consider you.’ I smiled and told her that I am not done with my master’s degree yet.”

Public conversations about academic status and relationship eligibility resurfaced in 2022, when social media debates questioned whether educational hierarchies should influence dating choices in Nigeria.

The man’s story has since drawn mixed reactions online, with some readers seeing it as a lesson about the times and self-respect, while others see it as a reflection of how social status continues to shape romantic expectations in Nigerian society.
