Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has sparked debate online after making a controversial statement about the challenges facing talented young Nigerians.

Speaking during a debate on the opportunities available to young people in the country, Seun Kuti said highly skilled individuals often struggle to find an environment where their talents can flourish.

According to him:

“If you are a young man talented in robotics or nuclear engineering or philosophy. Just go and start Yahoo, because there is nothing for you here in Nigeria.”

Backlash supporters argued that Seun Kuti highlighted the frustration experienced by many educated and talented young people who face limited opportunities despite their qualifications.

Critics, however, have argued that no circumstances justify the promotion of criminal activity, even as a joke or an expression of frustration.
