“Posting about kidnapping on WhatsApp won’t change anything” — Man urges Nigerians to focus on voter registration

Nigerian man criticizes what he described as performative activism on social media, particularly the habit of sharing posts about insecurity and kidnapping on private WhatsApp statuses.

In a video circulating online, the man claimed that many people are expressing anger online without taking practical steps that could affect governance and public policy.

He questioned the effectiveness of the repeated reposting of kidnapping-related content on WhatsApp, suggesting that such posts often reach only personal contacts and not decision-makers or the wider audience.

Instead, he urged Nigerians to focus on getting their permanent voter cards (PVC) and encouraging others to do the same.

According to him, active participation in the electoral process is a more meaningful way to initiate change and hold leaders accountable than simply sharing posts on national issues.

The man said…

“Most of you are so used to performance. Tell me why you are posting about kidnapping on your WhatsApp status. Who sees this garbage? Do you have any politician on your WhatsApp status? You have abandoned what you were supposed to be doing and are posting nonsense.

My friend’s post about PVC. You can go and get your PVC and sensitive others can go get their PVC and keep sharing. It’s not a hijack post and telling you to keep resharing. Who sees that?

Instead of posting it on Instagram where people can actually see things like that, but you’d post ny@sh and rubb!sh, then come on WhatsApp which is private and post ok!dn@pping.

Don’t worry until it gets to you, you will see the performance. People will pretend they care when they really don’t. Do the needful, get your PVC and always tell people to get their PVC because that’s what your contacts need.”
