“Since I moved to America, I don’t pray for 20 minutes anymore” – Man compares life abroad to Nigeria

Nigerian man has sparked reactions online after sharing how moving to America has changed his outlook on prayer, work and governance.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), he claimed that many of the things that people spend hours praying and fasting for in Africa are already provided through effective systems and government structures in developed countries.
“Since I came to America, I no longer pray for 10 minutes, 20 minutes. What am I praying for? The things that I prayed for at home in Africa that God would provide for me, I came to Yankee and saw that the government and the system have already provided those things for the people.”
According to him, many Africans were forced to beg for basic necessities because governments failed to provide opportunities and basic services to citizens.
He recalled how he spent his time prayer and fasting for employment after graduation from university, only to later find that many of the jobs people had prayed for were either unavailable or reserved for those with political connections.
“I could remember back home in Nigeria, those days after I graduated, I would pray for 30 minutes, 40 minutes, fasting to get a job.
And I came to Yankee and realized that I was wasting my time at home in Nigeria praying for some things. First of all, we are praying that we get jobs back home in Africa, and there really aren’t any of those jobs.”
The man’s comments continued to spark debate online, with some agreeing with his views on governance and opportunity, while others argued that prayer remains important regardless of location.
One user wrote, “He speaks the truth. Good governance solves many problems.” Another added, “Prayer is still important no matter where you live.”

Ever since I came to America, I have not prayed for more than 10 minutes, all the things I prayed for in Nigeria, I came to the US and found out that the government already provided everything for free… So why do I have to pray for 1 hour? pic.twitter.com/BS0A03t50C
