“Something just happened…” – shouts a woman as the Nigerian army reportedly demands £2m before bringing her brother’s body for burial

A video circulating on social media sparked public outrage after one woman said she was Nigerian Army she reportedly demanded ₦2 million before bringing her late brother’s body for burial in Benin City, Edo State.

In an emotional recording, grieving the sister said the deceased soldier had served in the army since he was 20 years old before his death while on duty in Benin.

She claimed that the family was told that they must first pay a large sum of money before the body would be released for burial.

Guys, something just happened. They were supposed to bury my brother here… this is the shovel they want to bury with,” she said in the video.

Expressing her frustration, she added: “What angers me the most is that my brother is a soldier. He has been serving since he was 20 years old.”

She further stated that the family was informed of the terms of payment before the body was released.

They said they cannot bring his body home until the family sends 2 million Naira to the army,she said.

According to her, the amount was described as transportation costs for moving the remains.

We have to send 2 million Naira before they bring his body… for transportation to bring his body,” she added.

The woman also questioned whether the arrangement complied with military funeral procedures for serving personnel.

If you die as a soldier… they will provide a vehicle to transport your body and bring you home“, she said, expressing confusion at the situation.

As at the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has not issued an official response to the allegations.
