A Nigerian priest, Bisi Adewale, has sparked conversations online after expressing his views on what he described as the most important responsibility of a husband in marriage.
Speaking in a viral video doing the rounds on social media, The pastor argued that a man’s primary duty in marriage is neither financial provision nor expressing love for his wife.
Instead, he said the greatest responsibility is to serve as the spiritual leader of the family.
Marriage begins with spiritual guidance, the pastor says
According to Adewale, many men focus on providing for their families and showing love to their wives while neglecting their relationship with God.
“A man’s first duty in marriage is not to provide. The first duty of a man in marriage is not to love his wife.” he said.
He emphasized that the husband must first become the “priest of the family”, pointing out that true love for one’s spouse can only come from a strong relationship with God.
A warning against selfish love
The pastor went on to explain that a man who loves his wife without first loving God can eventually develop a self-centered approach to marriage.
“If you love your wife and you don’t love God, very soon you will be mean to that woman because you won’t even know how to love her,” he said.
He added that such love could become demanding and selfish, potentially leading to emotional damage in the relationship.
“First seek God”
Citing biblical teachings, Adewale encouraged married men and those preparing for marriage to prioritize their spiritual lives.
“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and everything else will be added,” he said.
He concluded by describing marriage as one of the blessings that follows a life centered on God, saying, “Marriage and other things were added.”
