Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has criticized Judy Austin, wife of her nephew Yul Edochie, following Judy’s comments questioning whether a woman without a traditional Igbo title should be allowed to wear a red cap.

Judy’s statements made a few days ago caused widespread reactions on social networks and opened new discussions about cultural authority and tradition.

Reacting in a lengthy post on Instagram, Rita Edochie dismissed Judy’s position on the matter and accused her of inconsistency, claiming she lacks the moral standing to lecture others.

She wrote:

“Is it right for a married woman in her husband’s house to take another married woman’s husband out of her house? I just want to know. Traditionalist aunt, I refuse to take your words seriously while ignoring your actions. You can’t behave wrongly and still expect to teach morality.”

Rita went on to argue that Judy lacked the credibility to counsel others, claiming she was “still deeply involved in the same crime day and night”.

She continued:

“It’s not only disturbing, it’s a huge affront to basic decency. It’s complete hypocrisy. It’s hypocrisy at its highest.”

The veteran actress also questioned Judy Austin’s suitability as a role model, citing her past comments about relationships and marriage.

“Sometime last year, the same person was advising women and young girls on how to maintain their marriages, despite not being able to stay in their own legally recognized marriage… What meaningful advice can come from someone accused of breaking up homes?”

Rita also dismissed Judy’s remarks about tradition, insisting that she had no authority to speak about cultural values.

“Who are you to lecture anyone about tradition? Isn’t it the same tradition that condemns infidelity? Even religious teachings say the same thing,” she added.

She ended her post with a sharp analogy:

“How can a referee commit fouls and still whistle at others? How can an examiner fail the test he puts on others? The irony is so strong it deserves its own title of chief. People should practice what they preach.”
