“I cried today, please stop calling me an actress” — laments Ayobami Ojo, reveals missed opportunities

Nollywood actress Ayobami Ojo has opened up about the challenges she faces in her profession, revealing that being labeled an actress has allegedly cost her business opportunities, relationships and even real estate deals.
In an emotional viral video circulating on the Internet, the actress stated that she no longer wants to be identified as an actress, saying that she is exhausted by the negative stereotypes associated with the profession.
According to Ojo, she once lost an opportunity to buy a piece of land in Lagos after the seller’s wife allegedly objected to the transaction because she was an actress.
She also claimed she was denied a rental property for her business after the landlord found out about her acting career.
The actress went on to claim that societal prejudices have affected her personal life, including her romantic relationships.
She said family members and friends of the man she was interested in allegedly dissuaded him from marrying her just because she is an actress.
“People, what exactly have we done to you?” she asked emotionally, insisting that she had never been involved in any scandal or wrongdoing to warrant such treatment.
Ojo criticized what she described as an unfair generalization of actresses, arguing that many people judge women in the entertainment industry based on stereotypes and assumptions rather than their personal character.
The actress said she worked hard to build her life, often working long hours in the UK to earn money and enjoy the rewards of her labour.
“I’m just a girl who likes to enjoy life. I suffered growing up and I want to spend my money and enjoy my money,” she said.
Fighting back tears, Ojo asserted that she is tired of the constant criticism and discrimination against actresses, adding that people are quick to celebrate entertainers but are just as quick to judge and bully them whenever they make a mistake.
She concluded by appealing to the public to stop judging actresses based on social stereotypes, insisting that many of them are hardworking women who are simply following their talents and careers.
