Moshood Abiola was believed to have won the election before it was annulled by the Ibrahim Babangida-led military government.
In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari officially moved the celebration of Democracy Day in Nigeria from May 29 to June 12 to recognize the importance of the historic election and the struggle for democratic rule.
